A Brief Guide to Prague

The VltavaThe Czech Republic lies in the very heart of Europe. It encompasses several ‘crown lands’ of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire - Moravia, Silesia, Slovakia, and, most importantly, Bohemia. Bohemia is easy to find on the European map - it looks like a quadrilateral standing on one corner, with mountain ranges clearly marking each side. Along the South-West lies the Boehmerwald, the famous ‘Bohemian Woods’, marking the border with Bavaria.

The Bohemian Woods are primeval and steeped in romantic legend. Apart from one railway and one road, they have never been penetrated by man. They create the backdrop for Schiller’s ‘The Robbers’, a play about disinherited noblemen turned robber (not unlike the Robin Hood legend) and Weber’s supernatural opera ‘Der Freischuetz’. The Vltava - a river in the Heart of Europe

PragueThough the Valentine’s Day is already in the past, here is the list of the best places for kisses in Prague - one of the most romantic cities in Europe, though, that can be still of use after the holiday. The first place in this peculiar rating was given to PetYin hill, rising on the left bank of the river - the legendary place for enamored ones, sung of in literature. One can visit it any season - the hill is beautiful in spring, in autumn and in winter. The lovers kiss near the statue of Karel Hynek Mácha (Czech romantic poet) - near the foot of the hill. It is considered that this guarantees love for the whole year.

The second place was given to the Charles Bridge, the place you should visit at dawn - till 8 a.m., or late in the evening. Read the rest of this entry »
